Fit is the first specification

A portafilter is not compatible because two listings both say 58mm. The basket diameter is only one dimension; the ears and locking geometry still have to match the group.

Current manufacturer documentation makes the point clearly. MHW-3BOMBER’s 58mm La Marzocco/E61 model says it is not suitable for Gaggia or Breville 58mm. Normcore solves the same problem by selling separate heads for E61/ECM/Rocket, Gaggia, La Marzocco, Breville/Sage and other families.

Before ordering, identify the machine model or group and use the product’s compatibility table. If the seller only says “58mm universal” for a portafilter body, that is not enough information.

Bottomless is diagnostic; the basket changes extraction

A bottomless portafilter removes the metal beneath the basket. That gives you a direct view of how the shot exits the coffee bed.

If the stream is uneven or coffee spurts sideways, the useful next question is not “which portafilter is better?” but what changed in the puck. Normcore and MHW-3BOMBER both explicitly connect visible channeling or spurting with grind, distribution and tamping.

A precision basket is different. It changes the flow path through the base of the basket, so installing one can change resistance and require a new grind setting. Treat it as an extraction component, not a camera window.

Breville and Sage require model-level checking

“54mm Breville” is still too broad for some aftermarket products.

Normcore’s current 54mm unibody bottomless model names Barista Pro BES878, Barista Express BES870XL, Infuser BES840XL and Duo-Temp BES810BSS, and says Not compatible with Bambino Plus (BES500). That is a concrete example of why model number beats family branding.

Breville’s current Bambino manual also lists both non-pressurized and pressurized filters. So the claim that a Breville owner must replace a pressurized basket before puck preparation matters is too broad. Check what your exact machine and region supplied.

Choose the upgrade in the right order

Normcore’s current conventional and unibody portafilter pages say to hand wash and avoid dishwashers, strong detergent or prolonged soaking. For a walnut handle, keeping the wood out of a soaking routine is also the conservative ownership path.

Baskets and removable stainless parts may have different care instructions. Follow the exact product documentation rather than applying one cleaning rule to the whole portafilter assembly.
