Breville Barista Pro Troubleshooting: BES878 Problems & Fixes
Troubleshoot common Breville Barista Pro BES878 problems: no water or hot water, loud pump, dripping or fast shots, no steam, overheating, grinder blockages, and when to contact Breville.
Quick diagnosis
This guide is for the Breville Barista Pro BES878. It covers owner-level checks documented by Breville and deliberately stops before internal electrical, hydraulic or heater repair.
Cafe & Crema has not performed first-party testing of these failure modes. The diagnostic order below follows current Breville BES878 documentation, with owner reports used only as secondary symptom signals.
| Symptom | First checks | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|
| No water / no hot water | Tank filled, fully inserted and locked; descale status; if shots only drip, grind/dose/tamp/basket | No flow remains after documented external checks |
| Loud pump with no water | Water above MIN and tank seated | Tank is correct but no outlet produces water |
| Espresso drips or does not flow | Coarser grind, lower dose, lighter tamp, clear basket, tank, descale | Restriction persists after those checks |
| Espresso runs too fast | Finer grind, higher dose, adequate tamp | Recipe changes do not affect flow as expected |
| No steam | Operating temperature, tank, descaling, blocked wand | Steam remains unavailable after cleaning/descale checks |
| Pulsing/pumping while brewing or steaming | Confirm tank; Breville says the pulsing can be normal operation of the pump | Sound changes materially or is paired with loss of flow |
| Machine stops while powered | Power off, unplug, 30–60 minutes cool-down | Thermal cut-out symptom returns |
| Grinder not dispensing | Beans, grinder chamber, chute, moisture | Cleaning and drying do not restore normal dosing |
| Loud grinder | Check for blockage or foreign object | Noise remains after documented cleaning |
No water or no hot water
Breville groups water not flowing from the group head and no hot water together in the BES878 troubleshooting table. The first checks are simple: make sure the water tank is not empty, push it down completely so it locks into position, and perform the machine’s descale cycle if maintenance is due.
If the group head only drips rather than producing normal flow, do not jump straight to a pump or valve diagnosis. Breville separately points to grind, dose, tamp and a blocked filter basket as possible causes of a restricted shot.
Loud pump but no water
A loud pump is not a component diagnosis. In the current BES878 manual, the specific entry for water not coming through while the machine makes a loud noise first points to an empty tank or water below the MIN mark.
Check water level and tank seating before trying anything invasive. If the tank is correct and there is still no water from the group head, hot-water outlet or steam path, move through the documented cleaning/descaling checks and then escalate rather than assuming which internal component has failed.
Recent owner reports use phrases such as “pump runs but no water” and “no water from any outlet.” Those reports are useful search-language signals, but they do not prove air lock, scale, pump failure, solenoid failure or heater failure in another machine.
Espresso only drips or does not flow
For a shot that drips or does not flow, Breville lists several external causes: grind too fine, too much coffee in the basket, tamping too firmly, an empty or poorly seated tank, a blocked filter basket, or a machine that needs descaling.
Change one variable at a time. Make the grind slightly coarser, reduce an obviously excessive dose, check the basket holes and water tank, and follow the BES878 descale procedure if the machine is due. If a basket remains blocked, use Breville’s documented cleaning-tool/tablet procedure rather than forcing the holes with improvised hardware.
Use our espresso dial-in guide when the machine responds normally to recipe changes but the shot is simply too slow.
Espresso runs too fast
For espresso that runs too fast, Breville points in the opposite direction: coffee may be ground too coarsely, the dose may be too low, or the tamp may be too light. Move finer and/or increase the dose, then judge the new shot before changing another variable.
A fast shot that responds to grind and dose changes is usually a dial-in problem, not evidence of an internal machine fault.
No steam or weak steam
For no steam, the current BES878 manual lists operating temperature, an empty water tank, a tank that is not fully locked in, a machine that needs descaling, and a blocked steam wand.
Work through those in that order. Let the machine reach operating temperature, verify the tank, then clean the steam wand using Breville’s documented procedure. If descaling is due, follow the BES878 cycle rather than improvising a chemical or internal cleaning route.
For milk technique after steam output is normal, see milk steaming and latte art basics.
Pulsing or pumping sounds can be normal
The BES878 manual explicitly says that a pulsing/pumping sound while extracting espresso or steaming milk can be normal operation of the pump. That matters because normal pump modulation should not be treated as a failure by itself.
Check the tank if the sound appears with poor flow. Escalate when the sound is new or materially different and is paired with no water, no steam, repeated stopping or another functional symptom.
Machine stops or overheats
Breville documents a safety thermal cut-out that may activate if the pump or grinder overheats. The prescribed response is to switch the machine off, unplug it and allow it to cool for about 30–60 minutes.
If the problem persists after the documented cool-down, Breville directs the owner to support. A recurring thermal cut-out should not be normalized by repeatedly power-cycling the machine.
Grinder not dispensing
When the grinder is not dispensing ground coffee, Breville lists three first categories: no beans in the hopper, a blocked grinder chamber or chute, and water or moisture in the grinder chamber/chute.
Fill the hopper if it is empty. For a blockage, follow the BES878 conical-burr cleaning procedure. If moisture is present, clean the chamber/chute and make sure the burrs are thoroughly dry before reassembly.
Do not keep forcing a stalled grinder. If the documented cleaning path does not restore normal dosing, move to support rather than extending disassembly beyond the manual.
Loud grinder or foreign object
For a loud grinder, Breville specifically identifies a blockage or foreign object as a possible cause. Remove the hopper, check for debris or blockage, and use the documented grinder-cleaning procedure.
The presence of a loud noise does not by itself tell you whether a burr, motor or another internal part is damaged. That diagnosis belongs after the owner-cleaning checks, not before them.
Cleaning versus descaling
Cleaning and descaling solve different problems. Coffee residue can obstruct baskets and grinder pathways, while scale affects the water path and can contribute to restricted flow or steam performance.
Use our descaling and water maintenance guide for the water-path distinction, and espresso machine maintenance for routine external cleaning and seal care.
Owner issue signals: symptom language, not diagnosis
Recent BES878 owner discussions include machines with no water from any outlet, no steam or hot water, group-head flow loss, and abnormal grinder behavior. These reports help identify the phrases owners search for and the symptom combinations worth covering.
They do not establish a common root cause. Similar symptoms can have different causes, and self-selected forum posts cannot tell us how often any problem occurs across the installed population. These are owner issue signals, not a failure-rate estimate.
Cafe & Crema therefore gives the Breville manual and Product Hub precedence for diagnostic order. We do not translate a forum repair into a recommendation to replace the same pump, solenoid, heater or control component in another BES878.
When to stop DIY and contact Breville
Breville’s safety guidance is clear that maintenance other than cleaning should be performed by an authorized service center. For internal electrical, pressurized hydraulic, heater, pump, valve or control work, use Breville Consumer Support or a Breville Authorized Servicer rather than opening the machine as routine troubleshooting.
Stop owner-level troubleshooting when:
- the power cord, plug or appliance is damaged;
- no water or steam returns after the documented tank, cleaning and descaling checks;
- external leakage persists;
- the thermal cut-out condition returns after the 30–60 minute cool-down;
- grinder blockage/noise remains after the documented cleaning procedure;
- the symptom requires internal access to diagnose safely.
The goal is to separate a maintenance or dial-in problem from a service case, not to guess which internal part has failed.

Frequently asked questions
Why is no water or hot water coming from my Breville Barista Pro?
For the BES878, Breville first says to check that the water tank is filled, fully inserted and locked, and that the machine is not overdue for descaling. If espresso only drips, grind, dose, tamp and basket blockage also need to be ruled out.
Why is my Barista Pro making a loud pump noise but no water comes out?
Breville's BES878 troubleshooting table specifically points first to an empty tank or water below the MIN mark. A loud pump is a symptom, not proof of a failed pump.
Why is my Barista Pro not steaming?
Breville lists operating temperature, water level, tank seating, descaling status and a blocked steam wand as the first checks. Use the documented steam-wand cleaning procedure before assuming an internal fault.
Why did my Barista Pro stop while it was on?
Breville says the safety thermal cut-out may activate if the pump or grinder overheats. Switch the machine off, unplug it and allow 30–60 minutes to cool; if the problem persists, contact support.
Should I open the Barista Pro to diagnose a pump, valve or heater fault?
No. Breville's manual states that maintenance other than cleaning should be handled by an authorized service center. Use Breville support or an Authorized Servicer for internal electrical, hydraulic or heater work.
