De’Longhi La Specialista Arte Evo Troubleshooting: No Water, Grinder, Lights & Cold Brew Fixes
Troubleshoot De’Longhi La Specialista Arte Evo no-water, grinder, portafilter, flashing-light, descaling, auto-off and Cold Brew issues using current De’Longhi support guidance.
Quick diagnosis
This guide covers owner-level troubleshooting for the De’Longhi La Specialista Arte Evo family, including the EC9250M/EC9255M support identities currently exposed by De’Longhi. Use the exact model label on your machine when you contact support.
Cafe & Crema has not performed first-party testing of these failure modes. Diagnostic order follows current De’Longhi help-center, support-center and FAQ guidance; owner reports are used only as secondary symptom signals.
| Symptom | First checks | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|
| No espresso / no water | Tank filled and seated; separate water-supply issue from puck restriction | No flow remains after documented external checks |
| Slow or stalled shot | Review grind, dose, tamp and basket condition | Flow stays abnormal after recipe and cleaning checks |
| Fast / watery shot | Review grind, dose and coffee freshness | Dial-in changes do not affect flow as expected |
| Grinder does not grind | Check for foreign matter; follow De’Longhi grinder-cleaning procedure | Grinder remains stopped after documented cleaning |
| Coffee filter is empty after grinding | Clean grinder attachment area and coffee grinder funnel | Funnel cleaning does not restore dosing |
| Portafilter will not attach | Reduce excess coffee and confirm puck is pressed | Portafilter still cannot lock with a normal dose |
| Coffee leaks around portafilter edge | Refit and rotate portafilter firmly | Leakage persists with correct insertion and clean sealing surfaces |
| Water in drip tray | Normal internal-circuit water can enter tray | Water appears outside tray or becomes persistent external leakage |
| Lights flash briefly at startup | Allow self-diagnosis to finish | Flashing pattern persists or matches a warning-light state |
| Descale light returns frequently | Verify water-hardness setting | Warning persists after correct setting and full descale/rinse |
| Machine turns off by itself | Check configured auto-off/stand-by interval | Shutdown is unrelated to the configured interval or repeats abnormally |
| Cold Brew pressure gauge rises | Use a coarser grind | Gauge continues to rise despite documented Cold Brew setup |
No espresso coffee is delivered or no water comes through
De’Longhi’s Arte Evo help center has a dedicated “No espresso coffee is delivered” branch. Its first documented check is simple: make sure there is water in the tank. Also confirm the tank is fully seated before treating the symptom as an internal failure.
If water is available but espresso still will not pass through the puck, separate the water-supply question from extraction resistance. A very fine grind, excessive dose, heavy tamp or blocked basket can stall espresso even when the water circuit itself is capable of delivering water.
Do not jump from “no espresso” to a pump, flowmeter or solenoid diagnosis. If the machine also cannot deliver water through other documented functions after the external checks, use De’Longhi support rather than opening the appliance.
Espresso is too slow, stalls, or tastes overly strong
De’Longhi exposes a separate help-center branch for coffee delivered too slowly and for coffee that is too strong. Treat that as a recipe/dial-in branch before a hardware branch when the machine otherwise heats and moves water normally.
Change one variable at a time: move the grind coarser, reduce an obviously excessive dose, make sure the basket holes are clear, and avoid over-compressing the puck. If the machine responds to those changes, continue with our espresso dial-in guide rather than assuming a failed component.
If flow remains abnormally restricted with a clean basket and reasonable puck resistance, move to cleaning/descaling checks and then service if the symptom persists.
Espresso runs too fast or tastes watery
The Arte Evo help center also separates too-fast / too-light extraction and watery coffee from machine-failure symptoms. Start with grind, dose and coffee freshness before treating a fast shot as a pressure-system fault.
Move finer in small steps and verify the dose. If a recipe correction changes flow in the expected direction, keep dialing in. If grind and dose changes do not materially affect the shot, verify the basket and machine condition before escalating.
Grinder does not grind or the coffee filter is empty
De’Longhi documents two useful branches. If the appliance does not grind the coffee, its Arte Evo help article points to foreign matter in the grinder and gives a model-specific cleaning procedure. If grinding runs but the coffee filter is empty, De’Longhi identifies a coffee grinder funnel is clogged condition and instructs cleaning the attachment area and coffee funnel with a brush.
Use those documented cleaning steps before assuming a failed grinder motor or gearbox. The support article for foreign matter tells the owner to move the grinder selector to position 8 before vacuuming beans and particles; because current Arte Evo product documentation conflicts on the total number of grinder settings, treat that number as a procedural position from the troubleshooting article, not proof of the grinder’s total range.
If the filter receives coffee but never reaches the expected dose, De’Longhi also provides a separate “perfect dose” branch that starts with the quantity dial and its second adjustment range.
Portafilter will not attach or espresso leaks around the rim
If the portafilter cannot be attached to the appliance, De’Longhi says excessive ground coffee or an unpressed puck can prevent engagement. Reduce the dose and confirm the puck is properly pressed before forcing the handle.
If espresso drips from the edges of the portafilter rather than the holes, De’Longhi’s first documented action is to attach the portafilter correctly and rotate it firmly as far as it will go.
Persistent edge leakage after correct insertion and cleaning is different from a simple fit problem. Stop forcing the portafilter and use support if the seal area appears damaged or leakage continues.
Water in the drip tray versus a real external leak
De’Longhi explicitly says there is water in the drip tray can be normal because of internal water-circuit operations. Empty and clean the tray regularly rather than treating every small amount of tray water as a leak.
That does not make water outside the tray normal. A persistent puddle under the chassis, water escaping from the front or sides, or a sudden change in water routing should be treated as an external-leak symptom and escalated after confirming the tank and tray are correctly seated.
Flashing lights: brief startup flash versus a warning state
De’Longhi has a dedicated “The lights are flashing” troubleshooting path. One documented condition is simpler than it looks: when all the lights flash briefly as the machine turns on, the official instruction is to wait for the machine to complete its self-diagnosis.
Do not generalize that startup behavior to every flashing-light pattern. If a light continues flashing after startup, use the De’Longhi help-center warning-light flow and match the exact icon/pattern shown on your machine rather than guessing from a different La Specialista model.
Descale light, frequent descaling, and an extra rinse
If the Descale light is flashing frequently, De’Longhi says the configured water hardness may be set too high for the water you actually use. Set the machine’s hardness level to match your water rather than repeatedly descaling just to clear the light.
If the machine requests a further rinse at the end of descaling, De’Longhi says the rinse-stage tank may not have been filled to MAX. Complete the documented rinse cycle with the tank correctly filled; do not stop the process early simply because the main descaling phase has finished.
Use our descaling and water maintenance guide for the difference between scale control, water hardness and routine cleaning.
Cold Brew: pressure gauge behavior and cold rinse
Cold Brew behaves differently from hot espresso on this machine. De’Longhi says the Cold Brew program extracts without pressure, so the pressure gauge should not rise during a normal Cold Brew cycle. If the gauge climbs, De’Longhi recommends trying a coarser grind.
After a hot drink, De’Longhi recommends a cold rinse before a cold recipe. On the EC9255 workflow, there is no separate rinse button: after selecting Cold Brew, start the cold rinse by pressing OK while the OK light is blue, then press OK again after a few seconds to stop it.
Do not judge Cold Brew by the espresso pressure zone. A stationary gauge during the cold program is expected behavior.
Cleaning and maintenance before service
Grinder funnel cleaning, basket cleaning, drip-tray care and descaling address different paths. Use the model-specific procedure for the symptom rather than applying descaler to a grinder problem or dismantling the machine because of normal drip-tray water.
Our espresso machine maintenance guide covers routine owner care. If normal external cleaning, tank checks, grinder-funnel cleaning and the documented descale/rinse procedures do not restore the affected function, move to manufacturer support.
Owner issue signals: symptom language, not diagnosis
Recent Arte Evo owner discussions include intermittent no-water behavior, grinder stoppage/clicking and water-leak symptoms. Those reports are useful for deciding which symptom combinations deserve coverage, but they do not establish prevalence or a common failed part.
These are owner issue signals, not a failure-rate estimate. Self-selected forum posts cannot tell us how often a grinder, water-circuit component, seal or control part fails across the installed population.
Cafe & Crema gives De’Longhi’s current support guidance precedence. We do not translate a forum repair into a recommendation to replace the same internal part in another machine.
When to stop DIY and contact De’Longhi
Use De’Longhi customer support or an authorized service provider when the documented owner-level checks do not restore operation, when persistent external leakage remains, or when diagnosis would require access to internal mains-powered, heated or pressurized components.
Stop owner-level troubleshooting when:
- the power cord, plug or appliance is damaged;
- water delivery remains unavailable after the documented tank and maintenance checks;
- the grinder remains unavailable after the documented external cleaning procedure;
- persistent water appears outside the normal drip-tray path;
- a warning-light state persists after following the exact De’Longhi help-center branch;
- the symptom requires internal disassembly to identify the cause.

Frequently asked questions
Why is no espresso coffee delivered from my La Specialista Arte Evo?
Start with De’Longhi’s documented external checks, beginning with the water tank. If water is available but espresso still does not flow, separate a puck restriction or maintenance issue from a service case before assuming an internal pump or valve failure.
Why is the coffee filter empty after the Arte Evo grinds?
De’Longhi identifies a clogged coffee grinder funnel as a cause. Clean the grinder attachment area and coffee funnel with the supplied brush before escalating the problem.
Should the pressure gauge move during Cold Brew?
No. De’Longhi says Cold Brew is extracted without pressure, so the pressure gauge should not rise. If it climbs during Cold Brew, De’Longhi recommends trying a coarser grind.
Why does my Arte Evo ask for another rinse after descaling?
De’Longhi says an additional rinse can be requested when the water tank was not filled to MAX during the rinse stage. Complete the documented rinse cycle rather than interrupting it.
Is water in the Arte Evo drip tray normal?
Some water in the drip tray is normal because of internal water-circuit operation. Persistent water outside the tray or a new external leak is a different symptom and should not be dismissed as normal purge behavior.
