Fellow Opus 2 vs Breville Smart Grinder Pro: Which Grinder Should You Buy?

Compare the Fellow Opus 2 and Breville Smart Grinder Pro on stepless versus stepped adjustment, single-dose versus hopper workflow, espresso dialing, timed dosing, retention evidence, portafilter use, maintenance, and value.

Quick answer

Buy the Fellow Opus 2 if you want stepless espresso adjustment, a true single-dose workflow, automatic stop, anti-static hardware and easy switching between espresso and filter coffee. Buy the Breville Smart Grinder Pro if your household keeps one coffee in the hopper and values programmable timed dosing, an LCD and grinding directly into the portafilter more than continuous adjustment.

These grinders solve the same broad problem in very different ways. The Opus 2 uses 48mm stainless-steel conical burrs, a stepless side dial, an integrated anti-static ionizer and automatic stop. Fellow builds it around weighing beans before grinding and moving freely from espresso to coarser brew methods.

The Smart Grinder Pro is a mature hopper grinder with 60 grind settings, Dosing IQ time control in 0.2-second increments, an LCD and dedicated portafilter cradles. Its strength is repeatable convenience when the same beans stay loaded for several drinks.

Cafe & Crema’s assessment is based on manufacturer documentation, independent testing, long-term owner reporting, serviceability information, and current market positioning. Cafe & Crema has not performed first-party testing of these two grinders.

Espresso adjustment: stepless control versus 60 fixed positions

For espresso, the most consequential difference is the adjustment mechanism.

Fellow documents a stepless side dial on Opus 2. There is no fixed click between one grind position and the next, so the user can make a smaller correction when a shot lands between two useful settings. Fellow also changed this system substantially from the original Opus, which used a stepped outer dial plus a separate internal micro-adjustment mechanism.

Breville gives the Smart Grinder Pro 60 grind settings across espresso through French press. Those settings are easy to recall, and the LCD makes the selected number visible, but they remain discrete positions. A larger settings count does not automatically equal finer espresso control than a continuous system.

For a non-pressurized espresso basket, Cafe & Crema therefore gives Opus 2 the adjustment advantage. The Smart Grinder Pro’s case is not that its 60 settings beat stepless control; its case is that the rest of its workflow can be faster and more repeatable for a hopper user.

If continuous espresso adjustment is your main criterion, our DF54 vs Fellow Opus 2 comparison shows how Opus 2 compares with another stepless single-dose grinder.

Dosing workflow: single-dose versus hopper and timer

This is the bigger day-to-day difference than burr diameter.

The Opus 2 is a single-dose grinder. You weigh the beans you want to brew, load that dose, grind it and then load the next coffee. Fellow lists a 100g single-dose load bin, but capacity does not turn it into a bean-storage hopper. The workflow is still designed around grinding a measured batch rather than leaving a bag of beans in the grinder.

The grinder also has automatic stop, so it shuts off after the beans have cleared instead of requiring a programmed grind time for each dose. That makes sense when input mass is already defined by your scale.

The Smart Grinder Pro takes the opposite approach. Its hopper is intended to hold coffee, and Dosing IQ controls motor run time in 0.2-second increments. The user chooses shots or cups, adjusts grind time and can repeat a familiar routine without weighing a fresh input dose every time.

Timed dosing is not weighed dosing. Bean density, roast level and how much coffee sits above the burrs can change the mass delivered during the same run time, so a scale remains useful when dose precision matters.

Choose Opus 2 when you enjoy weighing each dose or switch beans often. Choose Smart Grinder Pro when several drinks come from the same hopper and saving steps matters more than explicit input dosing.

Portafilter workflow: transfer cup versus direct grinding

Breville has the more direct espresso routine.

The Smart Grinder Pro includes a 50–54mm portafilter cradle and a 58mm cradle. The portafilter can sit under the chute, engage the portafilter switch and receive the programmed dose directly. That is particularly convenient with a Breville Bambino or Bambino Plus because their 54mm-class portafilters fit the smaller cradle.

Opus 2 uses a transfer-cup workflow. Fellow includes an espresso dosing cup compatible with 54mm and 58mm portafilters. The grinder deposits coffee into that cup, then you transfer the grounds to the basket.

Neither approach is universally better. Direct grinding removes a transfer step. A dosing cup is more natural when you already weigh each dose, use a funnel or WDT tool, or change between different machines.

If Breville’s direct-to-portafilter workflow is attractive but you want to compare it with a newer stepless Baratza, see our Baratza Encore ESP Pro vs Breville Smart Grinder Pro comparison.

Multi-method use: both are broad-range grinders, but bean handling differs

Opus 2 and Smart Grinder Pro are both positioned beyond espresso.

Fellow specifies Opus 2 for espresso, pour-over, electric coffee makers, French press, AeroPress and cold brew. Its stepless dial uses visible brew guidance to help move through that range without a second internal adjustment control.

Breville positions the Smart Grinder Pro from espresso through French press and ties the broad grind range to its shots/cups interface. CoffeeGeek’s long-term review likewise treats it as a genuinely multipurpose grinder and argues that this broad utility is central to the product’s appeal.

The difference is how the beans move with you. If the same coffee is used for espresso in the morning and drip later, the Smart Grinder Pro’s hopper and saved timer routines can be efficient. If different coffees are assigned to different methods, Opus 2 makes switching simpler because the chamber is intended to start with a measured dose rather than a stored hopper load.

Static and retention: separate Fellow’s claim from independent measurements

Fellow markets Opus 2 around a redesigned grind path for near-zero retention and an integrated anti-static ionizer. The company says the ionizer reduces static buildup and the revised path reduces coffee left behind. Those are manufacturer claims about the design, not Cafe & Crema measurements.

Bon Appétit’s August 2026 grinder testing adds an independent data point. In that publication’s fine, medium and coarse tests, its Opus 2 retained no more than 0.1g. That is a result under Bon Appétit’s protocol, not a universal guarantee for every coffee, setting or unit.

The Smart Grinder Pro has a very different evidence profile. CoffeeGeek’s 2023 full review draws on several units and years of use and reports substantial retention, especially when the grinder is treated as a single-dose espresso machine. The publication explicitly recommends using it as the hopper-oriented grinder it was designed to be rather than expecting a low-exchange single-dose workflow.

Those sources do not create a standardized head-to-head laboratory comparison. They do support a practical conclusion: Opus 2 is the stronger design for frequent bean changes and measured single dosing; Smart Grinder Pro makes more sense when the hopper stays loaded with one coffee.

Current-model quality context: the Opus 2 evidence is newer

Opus 2 launched in 2026, so its long-term owner history is necessarily shorter than the Smart Grinder Pro’s.

Bon Appétit’s reviewer reported that the adjustment wheel on the first Opus 2 sample moved while the grinder was running. The publication says Fellow described the problem as affecting some earliest units, said it had been corrected, and supplied a replacement that did not repeat the issue.

That is useful sample-level quality-control context. It is not evidence for a population failure rate, and Cafe & Crema does not use it to predict how often a retail Opus 2 will have an adjustment problem.

The Smart Grinder Pro has the opposite advantage: it has been on the market for many years, and CoffeeGeek’s review draws on multiple units and long-term use. More history can reveal workflow trade-offs, but age alone does not make the older adjustment and retention architecture preferable for espresso.

Burrs: 48mm Opus 2 versus an unspecified current Breville diameter

Fellow specifies 48mm stainless-steel conical burrs for Opus 2.

Breville’s current US Smart Grinder Pro page specifies stainless-steel conical burrs but does not publish a burr diameter. Cafe & Crema does not fill that gap with a retailer listing or assume a dimension from another Breville product.

That also prevents a misleading comparison. Even if both diameters were known, burr size is not a shortcut to espresso quality. Burr geometry, alignment, feed behavior, motor performance and adjustment resolution all matter. Larger burrs are not automatically better burrs.

The actionable difference here is not a millimeter count. It is stepless versus stepped adjustment and single-dose versus hopper workflow.

Cleaning and maintenance

Fellow’s current Opus 2 materials emphasize straightforward cleaning access, and the grinder includes a magnetic cleaning brush. The company also redesigned the grind path and documents model-specific support for the second-generation grinder.

Breville provides an official Smart Grinder Pro instruction manual, product support hub, cleaning guidance, parts listings and repair channels. The manual documents removal and cleaning of the burr area and the accessories used in normal operation. If the Breville is already on your counter, the Smart Grinder Pro troubleshooting guide covers no-start, blocked-flow, hopper-lock, noise and internal-range questions.

CoffeeGeek characterizes the Breville as more appliance-like than Baratza’s owner-serviceable grinder architecture, but that is not the same as saying the Smart Grinder Pro is disposable or unreliable. For this comparison, the stronger evidence is simply that both brands provide cleaning/support material, while neither maintenance path changes the central dosing decision.

Convenience and interface: Smart Grinder Pro still has a clear niche

A stepless grinder can have better espresso adjustment architecture and still lose on convenience for a particular household.

The Smart Grinder Pro’s LCD shows grind setting, grind time and the selected number of shots or cups. Dosing IQ lets the user program repeatable timed doses, and the portafilter cradles reduce handling between grinder and machine. Those features remain useful when the same beans and drink routine repeat every morning.

Opus 2 deliberately removes much of that interface. There is no need to program a dose time when the dose was already weighed before loading. The user adjusts grind size, starts the grinder and lets automatic stop finish the cycle.

The comparison is therefore not “modern versus outdated.” It is explicit-dose simplicity versus programmed hopper convenience.

Value without relying on today’s retailer price

Retail prices, promotions and stock change, so this buying conclusion does not depend on a temporary price gap.

Opus 2’s value comes from combining stepless espresso-capable adjustment, 48mm conical burrs, automatic stop, anti-static hardware, multi-method range and a single-dose workflow in one grinder.

Smart Grinder Pro’s value comes from feature density around a different routine: 60 settings, Dosing IQ, an LCD, hopper storage and direct-to-portafilter grinding with two cradle sizes.

If you would ignore the Smart Grinder Pro’s timer and keep weighing single doses into it, much of its advantage disappears and its retention trade-off becomes more relevant. If you would dislike weighing every dose for Opus 2, its cleaner exchange workflow may not compensate for the added scale step.

Who should buy the Fellow Opus 2?

Choose the Opus 2 if most of these describe you:

  • espresso is important and you want stepless adjustment;
  • you weigh beans before grinding;
  • you switch coffees often;
  • one grinder needs to cover espresso and filter methods;
  • automatic stop fits your routine;
  • anti-static hardware and low-exchange single dosing matter;
  • a dosing cup that supports both 54mm and 58mm portafilters is useful;
  • you accept that Opus 2 has less long-term history because it is a newer model.

Who should buy the Breville Smart Grinder Pro?

Choose the Smart Grinder Pro if most of these describe you:

  • one coffee stays in the hopper for multiple drinks;
  • timed dosing saves you more effort than weighing every input dose;
  • you want a visible LCD for setting, time and shots/cups;
  • grinding directly into a 50–54mm or 58mm portafilter is a priority;
  • you value easy recall of numbered settings across brew methods;
  • you brew batch/filter coffee as well as espresso;
  • you are comfortable with a hopper-oriented workflow rather than low-retention single dosing.

Buying conclusion

For most espresso-focused buyers choosing specifically between these two, Cafe & Crema would buy the Fellow Opus 2. Stepless adjustment gives it the more useful dial-in architecture, and its single-dose, automatic-stop and anti-static workflow is better aligned with weighing doses, switching beans and minimizing exchange between coffees.

Buy the Smart Grinder Pro instead when convenience is the goal, not maximum espresso adjustment freedom. Its hopper, Dosing IQ timer, LCD and direct-to-portafilter cradles make a strong case for a household that uses one coffee repeatedly and wants fewer manual dosing steps.

Neither conclusion depends on a burr-size shortcut or a temporary retailer price. The decision is fundamentally stepless single dosing versus stepped timed hopper dosing.
